Mineral King Winter Trip 2 - 3/8/2007

This is the second in our series of Mineral King Winter Trips. The first can be found here. We started out from Woodlake, CA on March 8th fairly early in the morning... Well, ok from our standards it was early. After a fantastic Hengst breakfast, we hit the road with all our essential gear stowed on John's trusty vehicle. We had high goals for this trip and happily accomplished all of them!!! The biggest by far in both our minds was to reach a high alpine lake, Eagle Lake. This meant going from ~7500 ft to ~10000 ft. Even in the summer months, this hike is an aggressive day hike, in the winter it turned into a two day trip. Very steep mountains at approximately 26 degrees also made the ascent especially difficult. I was very grateful to have along an ox of a cousin to make the vast majority of foot steps that I could follow in. BTW, following directly behind is not always the most suggest method of walking up a snow covered slope and should be evaluated for avalanch danger on a case by case basis... Turned out just fine in this case. We both had plenty of cold weather gear and an ice axe to use as a self belay device to stop a fall. I could go on and on here, however the real stories are in the photos and the captions. There are many great stories, so spend some time and have fun seeing the Mineral King area in the winter!!!

As you may have noticed in my other albums, the first name in the description is who took the photo. It is great to have a second pair of eyes for photos.

What an amazing breakfast we had!! Thanks to an early rising Hengst household, we had some good food. Jeff is helping out by flipping pancakes.

After breakfast, we hit the road. There are two gates that are locked in the winter, mainly to try to prevent people from planting drugs near the road. A very large drug bust in August 2007 uncovered over 40,000 plants at a pot...

Um... what have we gotten ourselves into? We're still pushing forward through slushy, melting snow to the point where we will drop our sleds.

The end of the line for the car. We didn't think it would be prudent to go any further since the snow seemed rather deep around the corner.

We dropped our sleds here, backed the car to well before the second gate and where the snow started, then walked back to our waiting sleds to get on with the trip.

And here it is, very similar to one from our previous winter trip with one major difference... no misty, foggy clouds. Sawtooth Peak is visible in the distance.

Here is a mileage marker. Our destination tonight is close to the Ranger Station which is 5 more miles!!! All uphill and pulling sleds, which I will honestly be able to say I did someday to our future children, just can't say we were...

Here is an interesting study of how snow accumulates as it rolls down a hill. I think we could probably define an equation for the cone angle...

Ok, so a little explanation is in order. Before the trip, we discovered that some industrious people had installed 2 webcams in Mineral King. They mentioned general photo times and we decided to try and have the webcams get a photo...
