Mineral King Caving Adventure

On October 18, 2006 myself, Sarah Hunyadi, John King and Mike Wilkinson set out on a journey of exploration. The trip, to a long abandoned Silver mine in the majestic mountains of Mineral King, normally a nice day hike, would prove to be quite difficult with each of us carrying 60+ lbs. The additional weight was due to 460 ft. worth of static climbing rope and many gallons of water. The campsite and nearby area is dry and thus requires packing in extra water. The view from our campsite was spectacular, the mine and caving experience was amazing and not possible without the expertise of Sarah and some great climbing gear. The ranges of tight to expansive spots was the broadest of all the caves I have explored (unguided or tourisized-at least for tight). A drop down into a 90 ft. ore shaft was quite memorable, especially the ascent using climbing ascenders. It was definitely a little spooky at times, however well worth the fright and I believe all of us would do it again. It's quite an amazing thought that people were trying to make a living out of that hole in the 1870's. An era that most of my video game playing generation would probably only last 5 minutes if immersed into. This photo album is long, so to fully experience it set aside some generous free time and run through as many as possible. Have fun!!!

These photos are taken by myself, my brother Mike and cousin John as indicated in the description. It's nice to not be the only photographer on a trip, I can be in some photos!!!
