Mineral King Sawtooth 1

This is our first attempt at conquering Sawtooth peak (~12300 ft) in Mineral King. We spent the first night at Lower Monarch lake, which is about 2000 ft. below the peak. The next morning, Mike, John and I set out to reach the peak. Most of the rest of the family on this trip had already done this peak, and once was enough! Some of my cousins have done this whole thing (out and back) in one day, which would make for a very challenging hike. The distance would only be about 12 miles total, but the elevation difference is about 5000 ft from the cabin. In any case, we made it a good ways up to the peak and were thwarted by a dangerous patch of snow/ice. With crampons and a rope we could have made it, but lacking the proper tools we decided to live to try another day. We finally conquered this peak later in the season and with just the three of us. The views from the highest vantage point for miles are well worth the effort.

Sawtooth trail parking, also at the end of the ~30 mile Mineral King road. Some people put a fence of chicken wire around the car to stop the marmots from chewing on radiator hoses.

After the first patch of snow there was a whole lot more covering the trail. So we decided to crosscountry below the snow.

Our campsite at the lower monarch lake. A very nice camping area which even had a food storage area to keep away the bears.

The cabin on the inside. It is big enough to sleep about 9 in beds and more on the floor as needed. It's also a pastime to play solitare with as many as we can, right now a quadruple game is in progress.
