Thomas Edison Lake, CA - 07/30/04

Thomas Edison Lake 7/30/04 - 8/03/04
John King
Mike Wilkinson
Jeff Wilkinson

This backpack is east of Fresno in the Sierra National Forest. This trip was substantial due to the large elevation change the first day, over 3000 ft. in 7 miles. For the first day out, this was a killer. However, I think it made sub sequential days a little easier. The highlight of this trip was a lot of high, alpine lakes (~9000 ft and up) and the variety of landscape. The loop takes us from big lake territory (Thomas Edison) to the high country, crystal clear lakes near timber line and back down through the eerie forest of Graveyard Meadow (yes there was a grave marked on the map). This was about a 20 mile loop that took us 4 days to complete.

Ah yes, another break. We had some serious elevation gain on the first day, so plenty of pit stops. This just happened to be an extended one. Also allowed a mule pack train to get down the trail.

Found our campsite at Silver Pass Lake. Now that was a hard day. About 3000 ft elevation difference over ~7 miles makes for a tough day, especially when you start at 7500 ft and drive up essentially from sea level. And this is...
